WEA RA

I'm in Spokane right now as a delegate to the representative assembly of our state's educator association. Things are going well and already we have debated and voted on two highly controversial topics. I am pleased to be part of the delegation set forward to initiate change in our policies, business items and resolutions of our union. Education is changing... Faster than I can keep up with. In a time when schools are struggling more than ever to provide more than what we get as well as make miracles happen with student achievement, this is a place where I have a voice in that change and feel empowered instead of overwhelmed. We are here. We are interested, involved, and vocal. It is too easy to sit back and whine hoping someone will make a change for you. Challenge yourself to become part of the change you wish to see in others. (paraphrased from Ghandi) Things can happen but, they're not likely to happen without getting out of your comfort zone.

Educators are currently in the hotseat about our less than successful education system. I watch teachers spend more waking hours doing the best damn job they can and yet, many voters, even legislatures want to take money from our schools to make up for the terrible budgets due to our economy. If only those individuals understood the many times we have wept because we love our students yet have our hands tied behind our backs.

Education is on the move. I am pleased more than ever to be involved and taking a leadership role in education. I'm not afraid. Who better to fight for than our next generation?

It's a good day here in Spokane to be a teacher!
